Made of black Damascus steel, the blade is covered in a whirlwind of ripples, waves and lines. To achieve these eye-catching, vividly contrasting layers, Honshu's master swordsmiths repeatedly hand-fire, fold and hammer weld two distinct high carbon steel varieties, sometimes for days on end. It's a slow, laborious process that has changed little since Damascus steel's development in the Middle Ages – no automation, every step diligently performed by hand. But the Boshin adds its own distinctive, modern twist; via an advanced process exclusive to Honshu, the blade's contrasting layers are shrouded in myriad shades of mocha, umber and deep onyx black.
